Last Thursday, the Student Government Association (SGA) held the first meeting of the semester, albeit late, as the body had to wait for a twentieth legislator. After announcements from the Executive Cabinet, Senator Azeezah Azeez ‘28 fulfilled that requirement so the senate could hold quorum to vote. Among the new senators joining the ranks in the Spring semester was Senator Sam Dylan ‘27. Last semester Dylan spoke before the senate to argue that Goucher Athletics had neglected to properly discipline a track athlete for making racist remarks with the team.
Attorney General Elowyn Ingler ‘28 called for senators to volunteer to be present at “open hours” in the newly opened Gopher Hole. Ingler also added that the open hours will be themed in the future to draw in more students. President Christian Houck ’26 claimed that an SGA presence was requested by admin for the Gopher Hole to be open.
The Goucher Black Student Union appealed for an increased club budget by $300, to facilitate 3 events; the Afro-Carib-Latinx Collab Party on February 21st, as well as the Showcase talent show, the returning Women’s Self Care event and a Black History Month event in collaboration with the Public Health Club and the Wellness Center. The appeal was approved by the senate with no votes against. The Goucher African Student Union also submitted an expenditure request for a “Fake African Wedding” event, also on the 21st.
President Houck’s announcements included a reminder that in the case of ICE activity on campus, the safest place for students is in dorm rooms. Houck also reiterated that the college will not allow ICE officers on campus without a judicial warrant. Treasurer Deonte Lewis ‘26 announced Anyiel Ajak ‘29 will serve as the new Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The Executive Cabinet is looking for senators to fill roles as assistant directors for cabinet roles to begin training students to replace the current cabinet once its current members leave.
