Goucher College plans to stay afloat during whatever troubles might be ahead of us. We’re seeing the beginning of their plan in action, ushering us onto campus.
As those returning will have noticed, the traffic route onto campus has been changed. Instead of the classic gate, incoming cars now turn left and pass the pond, straight onto the campus. The gatehouse has been torn down, but not yet relocated.
Those returning may be wondering: why the change? The TLDR: Whiting Turner is building their new headquarters on the 6 acre plot on the front of the campus and Edenwald is expanding 3 towers onto a 3 acre plot behind the headquarters. Though the Whiting Turner construction is more visible.
For those who are new around here, Edenwald is the senior living community located on Southerly Road, just past the Whiting-Turner site and across from the Towson Town Center. The relationship between Goucher and Edenwald has been established since 1985 when Edenwald moved next door. Student employment, classes, connection to alumni, etc . In 2022, the two institutions tied themselves together with a letter of intent to build a formal University-Based Retirement Community (UBRC), the first of its kind in Maryland. Three acres were leased to Edenwald to build three new towers for resident living, classrooms, a cafe, parking, and other things that can be found in the press releases.
But we aren’t seeing the Edenwald construction as much. Yet. Pictured here are recent images of the Whiting-Turner construction site.
Whiting-Turner, the multi-billion dollar construction company that has been proudly local to Baltimore for over 100 years, is moving their headquarters from Joppa Road onto Goucher Campus. Keeping on theme with Edenwald, statements by Goucher say that there will be educational opportunities that open along with the building. Nothing has been announced officially as of yet. Goucher also has a preexisting relationship with Whiting-Turner. They renovated the Alumni/ae House in 2001 and the First Year Village in 2018. The 50 year lease, with an opportunity to buy out the property at the end, was signed and announced in February of 2025. So get used to seeing the orange and white around our quintessential blue and gold.
Whiting-Turner construction began last semester with the removal of several trees, fencing off the site, and has since continued with further demolition and beginning stages of construction. Things are in full swing! Naturally, Whiting-Turner is managing its own construction. There are 5 surveillance towers surrounding the site, consistent with the security at their other sites. Emails are regularly sent letting the campus community know about disruptions and updates.
It was clear that the site celebrated America’s 250th birthday over the summer. Flags decorated the construction site office and a large American flag was flown off of a piece of equipment next to Dulaney Valley Road. No flags were flown in June.
