Crisp leaves littering Van Meter Highway and gusts of crisp wind announce the arrival of the coziest season on Goucher’s campus: fall! As temperatures drop and students don sweaters, weekend plans quickly become occupied with enjoying the autumn weather. Whether you hope to indulge in festive fall flavors or lean into everything spooky, this list of Maryland fall activities has something to offer you!
- Visit a pumpkin patch!
The allure of visiting a local farm is twofold- supporting the community and getting a pumpkin for carving, a quintessential autumn activity. Located 20 minutes from campus is Weber’s Cider Mill Farm, known for its refreshing apple cider slushies and pillowy apple cider donuts. In addition to freshly baked goods, Weber’s offers hayrides and visits with their adorable farm animals. If you’re up for a drive, consider visiting Magnolia Meadows Farms, located just outside of Frederick, MD. Here, you can enjoy freshly made kettle corn and locally sourced apple cider. The farm offers many beloved fall activities, including pumpkin picking, a corn maze, and hayrides. Magnolia Meadows is also known for its apple cannons, where guests compete to launch apples at a target for a chance to win a prize.
- Visit a haunted house!
If a thrilling night of terror is more your style, consider going to Legends of the Fog! Located in Aberdeen, MD, Legends of the Fog is known for its haunted hayride, corn maze, and classic haunted houses.
- Enjoy an eerie historic tour!
If you like spooky ambience but aren’t a fan of jumpscares, consider embarking on a mysterious historical tour. If you have a penchant for Poe, Baltimore has much to offer you. The famed poet died mysteriously in Baltimore, and today visitors are able to visit the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum. Baltimore is also home to Poe’s final resting place- visit, if you dare!
- Enjoy a hike!
There’s nothing quite like the autumnal aesthetic, and a hike or nature walk is an ideal way to enjoy the fall weather! The Loch Raven Trails, located ten minutes away from campus, offer breathtaking views of the Loch Raven Reservoir and surrounding woods. This charm is enhanced by the flocks of geese and ducks that call the reservoir home. Make sure to visit before they migrate south for the winter!
- Visit the Renaissance Festival!
A beloved Maryland activity in fall is the Ren Faire, open from late August to October. The festival is packed with entertainment, from jousting shows to axe throwing. Wear your favorite medieval fashion, enjoy festive treats, and shop artisanal products!
Hopefully, this list has inspired some fun fall plans and shown what Maryland has to offer. Happy fall from all of us here at The Quindecim!
