As part of Spirit Week, a weeklong event where Goucher students show their school pride, the Student Engagement Team rolled out the red carpet for the final day– Fancy Friday. Students were encouraged to wear their most glamorous outfits, which provided the perfect opportunity to showcase some of the most fashionable students at Goucher. I scouted out some of those students and asked them for the inside scoop on what they were wearing. Here’s what they told me:
Jimy Kuhn, ‘27, was the first person I interviewed on the runway, as he was working the event with SET. He wore a sophisticated ensemble with small details that piqued my interest, such as a celestial-patterned tie and blue corduroys.
Stella: Can you tell me about your outfit today?
Jimy: Everything came from Goodwill or Savers. I had originally planned to wear white pants, a black shirt, and a white tie. I put it on– it wasn’t looking right. So I went for a dark blue tie, dark blue cords, and a black shirt. I do have a blue jacket, but it’s way too hot.
Stella: I think that was an excellent sartorial decision. Anything else you would like to add?
Jimy: Today is Fancy Friday, a very important day of our Spirit Week. It is an excuse to wear excellent outfits.
Next, I talked to Esther Everson, ‘25, who was impeccably dressed for Fancy Friday. I was drawn to their whimsical yet classy outfit, with fun patterns and pops of color. It was a modern twist on a vintage-inspired style.
Stella: Can you tell me about your outfit today?
Esther: The idea today was to be as fancy as possible while being as comfortable as possible. So, I put on some of my favorite fancy pants. They’re just a nice navy, I got them from Kohl’s. And then we have my trusty suspenders. They’re a must for a fancy outfit, and they are blue to match the pants and the hat. And then my roommates helped me choose the green tie for a pop of color.
Stella: And your earrings, they match!
Esther: Yes! I tied it with a Prince Albert knot– a sleek but subtle statement. And here we are.
Stella: Anything else you’d like to add?
Esther: Get your Gala tickets, it’s gonna be a lot of fun.
I practically chased down Aaliyah Dioses, ‘25, when I saw her wonderfully coordinated outfit. She reminded me of a vampire, wearing a blood-red corset and makeup to match. Other students even stopped her in the middle of our interview to tell her they loved her outfit.
Stella: Can you tell me about your outfit today?
Aaliyah: My outfit was actually styled by Spice, my best friend and roommate. Whenever I look good, she’s the one styling me. I got the skirt from Hot Topic and the shoes from Nordstrom Rack. The top is from H&M.
Stella: I love the vampy vibes I’m getting, very cute. Especially the lip combo and the lashes.
Aaliyah: Thank you!
Stella: Anything else you’d like to add?
Aaliyah: Everyone just slays.
Finally, I talked to Vivian Huddleston, ‘25, who subtly showed her Maryland state pride on the runway. Vivian subverted expectations by wearing a tuxedo, which suited her (no pun intended) quite well.
Stella: Can you tell me about your outfit today?
Vivian: I knew that today was Fancy Friday, and I looked at all the other outfits I had for Spirit Week and thought, I’m wearing a dress every other day this week, so I can’t wear a dress on Fancy Friday. It would be the same thing I wear every day. So I thought a suit would be funny. The pants are from Boscov’s, they’re really old. The shirt and shoes are my mother’s, and I thrifted the jacket. I think it’s part of somebody’s tuxedo, because it’s got a satin lapel. I also got the bowtie secondhand.
Stella: Awesome. Anything else you’d like to add?
Vivian: To everyone who didn’t participate in Spirit Week, you’re not too cool to do anything!
