Meona Boykin ‘28, a Loch Raven High School graduate and starting freshman at Goucher, has been breaking Landmark Conference records during her first season with the Goucher Women’s Basketball Team.

On November 18th, 2024, Boykin was named the Landmark Conference Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week. She became the first Goucher Women’s Basketball player to earn the honor since Kyla Smith in 2022-23.

At the start of Boykin’s season on the Basketball team, she averaged 17.3 points per game, 8.7 rebounds, and 6.3 steals. She continues to hold the No.1 spot in the Landmark Conference for most points scored, averaging 18.2, and most number of steals at a 4.3 average.

Boykin, individually, also ranks No. 7 nationwide for Player Efficiency Ratings on D3 Sports Data. PERs are statistics that measure a player’s all-around performance, tracking both positive and negative contributions.

Boykin said that she first started playing basketball in third grade as a hobby, where she played as the only girl on a team filled with boys.

“It was something to do, and I didn’t know I was good at it until I started really playing the sport,” Boykin said.

“I was playing with boys, and it didn’t always go so well, but I was a good player on the team… and they were a little mad about it.”

Boykin said she started to recognize her talent in basketball during her seventh grade year, which led her to continue her path on Loch Raven’s basketball team and at Goucher’s.

“It was a fun thing to do, but I didn’t think it was going to be my career until I got into the seventh grade and that was when I kind of realized…..I was talented at the sport,” Boykin said.

Boykin said basketball opened new doors for her, bringing her to new programs and helping her meet new people. She also stated that she chose Goucher not just because of the school’s small size, but also because she wanted to be part of a positive change in the women’s basketball team.

“I just enjoy and like the community basketball has, along with meeting new people,” Boykin said.

“I can’t waste a gift I have,” she remarked, “I chose Goucher because I wanted to break records and change what Goucher was and what they had to help make the team and Goucher itself stand out more.”

In the Landmark Conference, Goucher Women’s Basketball holds its seat at No. 1 with the highest average in combined team rebounds at 51.1, team offensive rebounds at 26.9 average, offense scoring at 91.8, and also leading in 3-Point field goals made at 8.8.

The team also ranks sixth in the Landmark Conference. On February 22nd, the team clinched their seat in the conference playoffs after winning against Wilkes with a score of 102-83.

They played against Catholic University for the Landmark Conference Quarterfinals on February 25th at 7 pm. Even though they faced a loss against Catholic, this is the Goucher Women’s Basketball’s first time in program history to head forward into the Landmark Conference Postseason Tournament.

At the end of their basketball season, the team also broke the record of having the most field goals, an attempted at 832-2403, and the highest points per game in program history at 91.1.

Goucher Women’s Basketball also secured a spot in the ECAC tournament for Women’s Basketball.

“Goucher has been treating me very well and for the team and our season, we found our motivation and kept practicing every day,” Boykin concluded. “It’s a great atmosphere.”
