The independent student newspaper at Goucher College

Letter from the Editor

by

This final edition marks our fifth publication of the semester and tenth of the year. It includes a wide variety of content, from news articles, to comics and photography, to sharp opinion pieces.

This edition is bittersweet for me. I’m so proud of everything we accomplished this year, including, but not limited to, maintaining a biweekly publishing schedule online, tripling our Instagram following, expanding our audience to include Goucher’s incarcerated students, and reaching pre-pandemic readership levels.

I’m sad that my days at The Q are over, however, I am confident that it is left in good hands. Dom McKinney ‘23 will take over as Editor-in-Chief for their final semester next fall, and Reese Finnigan ‘25 will step into the role of Managing Editor.

In addition to their duties as Managing Editor, Dom has worked hard this past year as our Treasurer to coordinate payments with the Student Government Association (SGA) and craft our club budget. They blossomed as a writer during their time with The Q, and have shown a firm dedication to the paper by helping with proofreading, copy editing and maintaining the website, all while contributing to almost every edition. Their comics (or “Domics”, as I like to call them) have brought a fun new addition to the paper.

Reese has been involved with The Q since her first year at Goucher, and quickly showed promise as a reporter in her first two years here. She’s done an excellent job as Sports Editor, featuring an athlete in each edition and writing more in-depth stories about athletics, often submitting multiple stories for each edition. Reese thoroughly fulfilled her job as Sports Editor, but has excelled on other topics with her reporting on SGA.

Thankfully, I’m the only Q member graduating this Spring, meaning that we’ve cultivated a strong base of younger writers, editors, and photographers who will maintain and grow The Q over time and work to make it better.

Next year, expect to see even more exciting additions to The Quindecim. Students enrolled in the Goucher Prison Education Partnership (GPEP) will begin submitting their contributions, and we hope to publish more multimedia content and work with other student media outlets.
This culminating edition saw our highest number of submissions this year, so I hope you enjoy them all and find something that piques your interest. A huge thank you to Professor David Zurawik, our Faculty Advisor, for all his guidance and unwavering support for The Q and Erica Gardner, Director for Student Engagement, and the OSE and SGA team for helping us meet our needs this year. And thank you to all our readers. Good luck on finals everyone, and have a great summer!

Amita (they/she) is the Editor-in-Chief of the Quindecim. They are a senior majoring in Communication and Media Studies and minoring in Religion and Justice. She is also a captain of Goucher's varsity field hockey team. Amita is from Silver Spring, Maryland and a graduate of Wheaton High School. In their free time, Amita enjoys reading, tending to their plants, foraging, and watching TV. They worked as a Communications Intern for Pro-Choice Maryland during the summer of 2020.
